There is no sound like
the sound of a muscle car! That lope sound is just too much. I have
always been into cars since I was young. My husband and I began
attending car shows about 18 months ago and while we were there looking
at all the beautiful cars, the hair on the back of my neck would stand
up when I heard the start of the cars. I told James I just can’t stand
it any more I need a muscle car! He wanted one as bad as I so we
started searching in town and on the Internet.
James found a car
here in San Antonio but we kept looking just in case there was something
else out there. We came across a car on the Internet located in
Oklahoma. It was a 1974 Dodge
Challenger. It looked beautiful in the pictures. It was white with
black interior. So there we went driving up to Oklahoma with a cashiers
check in hand and a U-Haul trailer on hold to bring it back on. Well we
pulled up and you just could not miss all the paint drippings on the
car. It had a poor paint job, the AC did not work, and the gages were
not working. Of course they made it out to be a beautiful car with
everything working when we inquired about it on the phone. Nonetheless
we told them thanks but no thanks and headed back home disappointed.
But wait, what about the car back home. We pulled over in a parking lot
in Oklahoma and called the guy back in San Antonio and made him an
offer. We settled on a price right then and there over the phone and
ended up paying less for the better car. We could not get back to San
Antonio fast enough so I told my husband move over honey I’m driving!
I don’t think we
slept all night because of the excitement and got up the next morning to
go purchase our first muscle car! Notice I said first. It is a 1970
Dodge Challenger with a great body and a great paint job. The AC works,
as do all the gages. There was nothing wrong with this car when we saw
it before going to Oklahoma, but I guess we just wanted to compare it to
before we made a decision.
When James drove the
car home a guy on the highway leaned all the way out of his car to give
James the thumbs up. That of course felt great and continues to happen,
as you all know who own a muscle car.
We put larger tires
on the car and are in the process of switching out the motor from a
small block to it’s original big block 383 (the more power the better)
with a 727 torque flight transmission, Doug’s headers, Barry Grant
carburetor, Edlebrock manifold, and so on. The exterior is blue with
black interior, which is in great shape also.
We want to thank
Wayne Keller for taking on this task of switching out the motors. He
has been very helpful and very patient. We also want to thank Steve at
“Paint Shop 101” for turning us on to the Mopar Club and helping us with
technical questions. Thank you also to all of those that have taken
time to answer any questions we have as new members who are just
learning about Mopar’s. You all have made us feel very welcome. It is
so much fun to drive a Mopar. We are blessed to own a muscle car of our
own now. Finally!
